Adam’s Spiritual Death

When did Adam die spiritually? I will contend that Adam died spiritually before he ate fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In other words, eating the fruit was “the fruit” of his already perceived separation from God.

Remember, Adam ate from the tree thinking he could become like God forgetting that he was already made in the image and likeness of God. He attempted to become something that he already was. He didn’t have to become like God because God made him who he was. Just as God says “I Am Who I Am”, Adam simply was who he was because God made him that way, perfect. There was nothing Adam could do to add to his image.

When Adam ate that forbidden fruit, he was essentially acting upon what he already wrongly believed was true about himself; that he needed to be like God.

Jesus said “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:27‭-‬28

He was saying to those who trusted in the law, that they have learned that breaking the law meant to act upon their lust when in reality they broke it when they entertained even the thought of  it.

In the same manner God commanded  Adam not to eat from that tree because he would surely die, but Jesus’ teaching shows that it wasn’t the act of eating that caused his separation from God but the very idea and false belief  that he was separated in the first place, and THAT was when he died.

To “know” your wife biblically is to become one with her. Eternal life is to be ONE with God. Jesus put it this way, “And this is eternal life, that they may know (be one with) You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3. You have been made ONE with God. Any attempt or belief to become something the Father has already made you is spiritual death. All we can do be a reflection of what God has already made us.

How You Were Freed From Sin

What gave power to sin?

“…the strength of sin is the law.”
I Corinthians 15:56

How is sin imputed?
“For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.”
Romans 5:13

What was the problem with the law?
“But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire… And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me.”
Romans 7:‭8-11

How did Jesus free us from sin?
“having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”
Colossians 2:14

What happens when there is no law?
“…for where there is no law there is no transgression.”
Romans 4:15

Does God remember sin in the new covenant?
“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
Hebrews 8:12

If the Son sets you free, you are extremely, exceedingly, tremendously, immensely, decidedly, remarkably free!

The Faith OF Jesus

Ask yourself. Do you think your faith would be stronger if you had the faith of Jesus instead of your own? If so, there’s good news!

The Bible says you died with Christ and it is no longer you who live but Christ who lives in you. Therefore the faith you exercise and operate in is not your own but the faith OF Jesus.

The NKJV’s translation would lead you to think it’s about you and YOUR faith IN Christ.

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith IN the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20 NKJV

But looking at the King James and the Young’s Literal Translation and you’ll see this in a whole new light.

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith OF the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20 KJV

“with Christ I have been crucified, and live no more do I, and Christ doth live in me; and that which I now live in the flesh–in the faith I live OF the Son of God, who did love me and did give himself for me;” Galatians 2:20 YLT98

Check out this verse too;

“knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith IN Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith IN Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. Galatians 2:16 NKJV

But it wasn’t YOUR faith in Christ that justified you. It was HIS faith that justified you.

“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith OF Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith OF Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” Galatians 2:16 KJV

“having known also that a man is not declared righteous by works of law, if not through the faith OF Jesus Christ, also we in Christ Jesus did believe, that we might be declared righteous by the faith OF Christ, and not by works of law, wherefore declared righteous by works of law shall be no flesh.” Galatians 2:16 YLT98

So if you’re struggling with whether the faith you have is sufficient. The answer is YES! Believe and know that HIS faith IS your faith. HE is the author and finisher of your faith. Don’t just have faith IN Jesus, exercise the faith OF Jesus!
